Whitman-Hanson 2010 Summer League

Weekly Game Recap

Week 1

Game 1 - Red vs Black –
The first game of the 2010 summer league got out to a quick start with the top 2 teams in the preseason rankings it was bound to be a great matchup, but Saletnik had something to say about that. Saletnik hit four three pointers in a row, which extended the league and put team Black down and out. Captain Nuby tried to keep his team in it but didn’t have much help and just couldn’t stop team Red. Saletnik who would finish the game with 18 points from beyond the arc and a game high 24 pts, which earned him player of the week.

Game 2 - Blue vs Yellow –

In the later game Blue seemed to control this game from the start. Getting out to a quick double-digit lead with Hatfield and Nate Nuby leading the way. Fader and Ford would force some turnovers and would find themselves and team Yellow back in it. With a tie ball game with just about a minute to go Blue would put a stop to Yellows run and hit some clutch free throws down the stretch which would seal the win for team Blue.

Week 2

Game 1 - Red vs Blue –

In the battle of the unbeaten Red vs. Blue squared off with the hopes of the best matchup yet, but things to seem end before they ever really started. The storyline of this game was rebounds. Kyle Yaedon couldn’t be stopped on the boards recording 19 rebounds to go along with 10 pts and teammate Saletnik would grab 12.  Blue looked like a toally different team in week 2 and couldn’t seem to find their rhythm. Josh Burnettes block over the fence would put an exclamation point on this matchup and send red to an impressive 2-0 start.

Game 2 - Yellow vs Black –

Well this was the battle of the beaten with both teams searching for their first win. Team Yellow seemed to be falling apart before the game even started with losing a player and half the team on vacation Yellow just barely put 5 on the court. Those 5 players were all Yellow needed as they dominated most of the game. Black didn’t have much of an answer for team Yellow or Fader who would impressively lead his team to victory. Black still looking for their first victory needs to hit the chalkboard. Fader finished with 23 points, which would earn him week 2 player of the week.

Week 3

Game 1 - Yellow vs Red

Yellow seemed to have this matchup won when Red seemingly couldn’t get enough guys to suit up. With only 3 players showing up Red looked like they were going to get their first loss. Red team pulled together and managed to get a 4th player and the game started. They would finally get 5 players by halftime and with the game pretty close Red team decided to go on a 15-0 run with the sharp shooting of A-Mac and Saletnik, but it was Yeadon who would dominate this game with 17 points and 16 rebounds to go along with 3 blocks eventually earning himself the Player of the Week. For team Yellow Fader (20 points) and Yucius (14 points) helped keep them in it, but Red was to strong down the stretch, which would keep them undefeated.
Game 2 - Blue vs Black

In this matchup Black desperately needed a victory, but it wasn’t going to be any easy contest against Blue. After last weeks disappointing loss we looked for Blacks after game practice to help this week – but that wasn’t the case. Blue looked like a much better team this week, they controlled the tip and never let Blacks practice help in anyway. Hatfield would control his team the way a captain should and McGonagle and Nate Nubys low post defense would hold Nick Nuby to a season low 5 points. Tony Cina would pick up some of the slack contributing 18 points to his helpless team, but with a rim-breaking dunk by Nate Nuby over a helpless Cam Meagher Black would land another loss leaving them baffled and furious with each-other.

Week 4

Game 1 - Yellow vs Blue

Basketball is definitely a game of runs and the week 4 matchup between Yellow and Blue had a ton of them. Blue got out to a quick lead thanks to Farrell who in his first game of the season made his presence known, Farrell would finish with 17 points. Ben Ford would give Yellow their own solid run, Ford knocked down a couple huge three pointers in a row, which would bring them to within one point of Blue with just about 5 minutes to go, Ford would also finish with a season high 17 points. Blue was to strong down the stretch thanks to the Player of the Week, Nate "Baby Dwight" Nuby. Nate would solidify his player of the week and the victory for team Blue.
Game 2 - Red vs Black
This matchup had ugly written all over it. With the undefeated powerhouse Red squad and the cellar dwellers of team Black this game should have been over before it started, but Black would put up an impressive fight. Nick Nuby would have another strong outing for his team with 16 points to go along with 12 rebounds, but it was previous Camper of the Week Jay "Bray Bray" Brazer whose sharp shooting, 15 points all from beyond the arc, would keep them in the game. Yaedon and Saletnik were held in check, but it was Noel James who would   step up for team Red. Uncle Bray Bray would have a wide open three pointer to tie the game with time expiring, but it would rim out and crush Blacks dreams for the first win of the season.

Week 5

Game 1 - Yellow vs Black

With Black looking its first win and Yellow looking to find themselves this was a game that both teams needed. Yellow would be shorthanded with only 5 guys and would be at an immediate disadvantage, but the way Black played it would not have mattered who was on the court for Yellow. Black came out on fire and would pull out to a quick 20 point lead and would never look back. Black looked like the pre-season #1 ranked team as they were firing on all cylinders. Cina and Nuby could not be denied the basket as they dominated down-low and when they didn't have anything the sharp shooting by Nunez and Brazer would help them out as they would combine for 7 three pointers. Cina would earn himself player of the week with a dominating performance and team Black got what they needed; a victory, and made team Yellow look silly in the process.
Game 2 - Blue vs Red
Blue and Red would put on the game of the season in week 5. Team Blue would be without their captain Hatfield, but they were not just going to roll over. Right out of the gates you knew that whoever had the ball last would win. With the Young Guns of Farrell and Champignie lighting up beyond the arc for 10 three pointers combined for team Blue and Noel "Lebron" James doing everything for Red this was a matchup for the ages. Team Blue would get out to a late double digit lead with just about 4 minutes remaining, but Red would storm back but the game was just out of reach and it was a little to late. Foul trouble would ultimately send Red packing with their first loss. By far the best game of the season on both sides!

 Week 6

Game 1 - Blue vs Black

"What happens in Vegas stays in Vegas." That was quoted by captain of the Black team Nick Nuby and Tony Cina who both took a trip to Vegas after their first victory of the season. They know how to celebrate! Anyways that left team Black extremely undermatched especially against a powerful Blue squad. It started ugly and only got uglier. Blue got out to a 21-0 start and Black did not have an answer on the offensive or defensive side of the ball. Black would get on a role and would cut the deficit to only 8 points in the second half, but Hatfield and company would put an end to that and would cruise to an easy double digit win. Team Black did not look happy at the end and Brazer quoted "its terrible our two main guys go to vegas in the middle of a summer league after our first win, man that hurts."
Game 2 - Red vs Yellow
Red was coming off their first loss and Yellow was coming off a lose to the only winless team. Both teams were definitely hungry to get back on track. A-Mac who would earn Player of the Week and captain Kameese would not let their team lose two straight as they looked solid throughout the entire game. This game was never really close, Yellow would have a couple of runs and would look as if they were going to come back but Red had a counter for every run Yellow made. Once again Red would control the boards and would hit from beyond the arc and cruise to another easy victory and would get back on track and leave Yellow looking for theirs.

Week 7

***Due to excessive rain Week 7 games were postponed to July 11th***

Rain did not stop T.J. McGonagle from getting "ICED", which was the only highlight and recap from this miserable rainy weekend.

Week 8

Game 1 - Red vs Black

Week 8 could not have come soon enough with having over two weeks off from the last games both teams were ready to get back to action and looking to end the season strong. Although the records would have determined this game be a blow out team Black would not back down and captain Nuby had his team working on all cylinders. This game would be close the entire game and with under about a minute to go Black had the lead and was just looking to close it out. A huge 3 by Yaedon gave Red hope and a couple turnovers down the stretch gave Red the ball back down 2 with under 10 seconds to go. Lackadaisical defense by Black would give a wide open put back by Saletnik off a Noel "Lebron" James missed layup and would send this thing into overtime. It would take double overtime to decide this one and team Red would continue their winning ways and come out on top. James would take Player of the Week with his performance.
Game 2 - Blue vs Yellow
This could possibly be a first round playoff match up and the intensity confirmed it. Right from the get go team Yellow wanted to make its presence known and team Blue was scratching their heads. Yellow seemed to control most of this game, but Blue would hang around the entire game and would take the lead with just about two minutes to go. Inbounding the ball Blue would make a costly mistake and throw the ball up for grabs Fader would steal the ball and go in for a layup to tie the game up. Another turnover by Blue, Ford would take it coast to coast and put it up and in for a 2 point lead. Blue would take advantage right away and Hatfield would send it into overtime with layup. The story of overtime was a technical foul called on T.J after tempers would flare and give Yellow and hard fought win over Blue. If this is a first round match up look for the intensity to grow.

Week 9

Game 1 - Blue vs Red

With a tough loss last week and a tough game this week Blue needed to get back to the team they once were and look to get some momentum heading into playoffs, but it would be a different story. KY "His & Hers" Yaedon came out on fire scoring 18 points in the first half alone and Kameese would clean up any miss he had for an easy put back. Blue looked to be still angry with last weeks outcome and looked to be showing very little effort as they walked up and down the court. Red would go on to win another game, but the story line here is team Blue going to be able to get their swagger back come playoff time; two losses in a row does not help. Captain Hatfield is going to need to rally his troups if they are going to have a chance in the playoffs.
Game 2 - Yellow vs Black
"Built Ford Tough!" For those would dont know who that is definatley knows now! Ben Ford would take over this game and he is only getting better week after week in perfect timing for team Yellow. His 33 points was just about enough to carry his team to another strong victory making it two in a row. No question Ford was player of the week. Black had no answer for him. Although Black was hanging close the entire game with some sharp shooting by Nunez, Yellow would never trail. Team Yellow has to be happy with these past two week performances and with a matchup against Red in the last regular season week they are looking to make it 3 weeks in a row and will be in prime condition for a nice playoff run.

Week 10

Game 1 - Blue vs Black

Not much to gain or lose in the last regular season game. Black did not have a full squad, but they came out to got an early lead and looked like they had a chance, but that quickly ended. Blue got into the swing of things and would pull this one out. Nunez was a late show and gave Black a little spark but it was a little to late and Blue got the victory.
Game 2 - Yellow vs Red
     Red Dominates. The End.
